CNET, an online media company, started out online in 1995 and has since grown to the point where a great many technology and media related sites have come under their banner. Video games are a part of this, and both GameSpot and GameFAQs have been acquired by CNET over time - GameFAQs in 2004, at which point it became a full fledged partner of GameSpot and the sites have partially fused.

The changes that CNET's takeover brought to GameFAQs resulted in a fair bit of unrest among the userbase, though people often forget that without this, there probably wouldn't have been a GameFAQs now. While people regret that CJayC eventually had to change his initial plan of never selling GameFAQs, fact is that both financially and practically, there was little else to do; and GameFAQs has been remarkably successful in keeping its own identity since, being still under the control of the same person and keeping its original design and purpose largely intact.

On May 15, 2008, it was announced that CBS Corporation would buy CNET Networks for US$1.8 billion. On June 30, 2008, the acquisition was completed. Former CNET properties are now part of CBS Interactive.
