Karmageddon
From WikiFAQs
Karmageddon, obtaining its name from a portmanteau of karma and Armageddon, happened during the afternoon and evening of September 18th, 2003.
Karmageddon is particularly notorious for being the only known case where the moderation system itself broke down: as a result, users were unable to mark messages, and moderators were unable to moderate them. Many users quickly took advantage of this breakdown and, for a few hours, were able to post account suicides and large amounts of ToS violations, particularly prevalent on the social boards. Around 8:30pm EST, CJayC temporarily shut down LUE and CE to all users except for the moderators, who were to then clean up both social boards[1], resulting in large numbers of suspensions, warnings and 3KLs - hence the origin of the term "Karmageddon". The marking and moderation system went back up around 10pm EST.
There was temporary fear amongst users of both social boards, especially LUE, who had been threatened with deletion of the board only a few months earlier. In the end, CJayC chose to hide the board away a month later in the SecLUEsion, meaning one could only access LUE by manually entering in the board link, but to no avail; only two months after Karmageddon, SteriLUEzation occured.
