New Moderator is the title given to moderators upon their initial promotion from regular user. The New Moderator userlevel originally did not exist, as all moderators were given an arbitrary level upon appointment. With the large influx of successful applicants in the 6th batch in December 2002, the New Moderator rank was created to differentiate them from the tenured staff, who were then branded as either General or Specialist Moderator. Although the General and Specialist levels were later scrapped, New Moderator remained and is still in use today whenever another batch of moderators is chosen.
New Moderators differ from full Moderators in the following:
- New Moderators could only handle marks in their assigned category, such as Off-Topic, which was selected at the application stage. With the 7th batch, this limit no longer applies as all Moderators have access to the same queue.
Promotion
There is no set criteria for the promotion of New Moderator to Moderator. The promotion is granted after the batch of new moderators are reasonably active and comfortable with handling marks, disputes, and user concerns a couple of months after they join the staff. A promotion carries no frills; it is simply a change of user level just as a level would normally change when a user has attained a certain level of Karma, but is performed by the Admin personally.
