SteriLUEzation
From WikiFAQs
SteriLUEzation was a major event on LUE that occurred on November 15th, 2003. After users invaded the LiveJournal of a girl who had committed suicide, CJayC cracked down on the board, 'sterilizing' it by preventing any user with an ID higher than 888113 from being able to visit the board. Coupled with the ExcLUEsion, these two events mark the turning point of LUE from its dynasty as the most active social board on GameFAQs to being only the third-most active board.
Background
LUE had gotten into trouble in the previous six months, starting with Black LUEsday in March 2003, which resulted in eighteen suicides and, including that of the infamous DarkCobra. In May, the RevoLUEtion, which involved a large-scale invasion of the Zelda Social Board, resulted in CJayC threatening to close LUE, leaving the choice of what to do with LUE up to the users, who ultimately voted for a requirement of user Level 31. In late September, Karmageddon occurred, wherein large numbers of users LUEicided their accounts on LUE while the moderation system was broken, knowing that they were untouchable. When LUE was temporarily closed for clean up in the aftermath, users feared it was permanent. In October, LUE was taken off the social board listings. This meant that a user could only post on LUE if they knew it was there, by manually entering in the board ID. The SecLUEsion was seen as a move to reduce the amount of activity on LUE, and CJayC himself likened it to 'quarantine' [1]. During this time period, it was revealed that LUE had four times as many moderations and more account bannings than any other board [2]. With all this, it seemed to many that the next major event could result in LUE being closed.
y2k's Topic
On November 15th, 2003, the user y2k posted a link to JustShana's LiveJournal. Shana was a girl who had recently committed suicide, and her family had edited her LiveJournal to reflect this, turning it into a memorial page. y2k initially got what he wanted, as LUEsers posted a few serious messages such as "I'm very sorry...", a few humourous ones "suxx0rz", and some of the common fads and memes spreading around at the time, such as "BALEETED!", "She bought an N-Gage, didn't she?", and "Tommy, you're permanently expelled!"
However, along with pictures of the Unholy Trinity and the Pain series, users then began to post more vicious things (The following are copied word for word):
“Stop wasting your sympathy and compassion on that little attention whore”
“In Soviet Russia, building jumps off you!”
“I had sex with your daughter’s corpse. I’m very sorry.”
“Y helo thar necrophiliac buttseks, LOL LOL LOL!!”
“You weren’t very good parents if you couldn’t even keep your daughter from committing suicide…”
“Family: what happen?
Cop: Shana set herself up the Bomb.
LiveJournal: we get signal.
Family: Its you!!
Satan: How are you gentleman? all your Shana are belong to wang.
Family: What you say?!
Satan: You have no chance to avoid suicide make your time.
LUE: Hahaha.”
Many LUEsers realized they had gone too far, and several reported the topic on MBH, hoping for a quick resolution and the bannings of those who had posted the more horrible postings on Shana's LiveJournal.
